House sitting & an unplanned pit stop

2008_08_11_NorthernRivers_19.jpgWell we had just over a fortnight in Cabarita Beach doing our house/dog-sitting, and got to travel up and down the coast a fair bit to see the sights, get a feel for the area, and do a fair bit of chilling out & sport watching!

It’s a lovely part of the world, & definitely somewhere that we will consider as a place to live if we decide that Sydney’s too much of a big city after a wee while. The biggest issue would be exactly where to live. On the Gold Coast in Queensland, particularly the Northern & Central parts, it’s pretty much a concrete jungle in most places…and those that are on rivers, canals or the beach cost a fortune! Further west there are some lovely place sin the hills, but you’re a bit out of the way, & are a good distance from the beach. South into New South Wales on the Tweed Coast, where we were, is the nicest & far less developed than Surfers Paradise et al, with a real village atmosphere and affordable homes within 5 minutes of the beach, but it’s at least a half hour drive to any realistic work place, and the motorway is busy at all times, with frequent prangs!

Hail, Sleet & Snow

2008_07_28_Toowoomba_03.jpgWe were headed to Toowoomba to visit Malky & Heather Brownie, old friends of my folks, and went the cross country route rather than via Brisbane, spending the night in a hotel in Kilcoy. Styled as a country hotel, it was a pub with rooms upstairs! Very basic, but they did show the Bledisloe Cup rugby, so no complaints from me! We got to Toowoomba on Sunday, in time for Malky’s barbecue! Heather is a native Queenslander, and Malky moved out in 1985. We met up with them & their kids when we were here for the World Cup in 2003, and both kids are now at university in Brisbane. Calum was home on a 4 week pharmacy placement, as he’s in his final year, & we’ll meet up with Gemma when we get to Brisbane.
